Change is coming to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the National Association of Realtors® is making its voice heard.

The U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs held a hearing this week to consider the nomination of Dr. Ben Carson (R-Fla.) as HUD Secretary, whose nomination was announced in December.

Dr. Carson testified and answered questions from the committee for nearly three hours, discussing everything from Federal Housing Administration policy to the Fair Housing Act. Carson

One day after the hearing, the National Association of Realtors® is weighing in with a letter in support, calling on the Senate Banking Committee to approve Dr. Carson’s nomination and move it quickly to the floor of the Senate.

“Dr. Carson has shown a commitment to ensuring all Americans have access to a safe and affordable place they can call home,” NAR President William E. Brown said following the hearing. “With that in mind, we’re urging members of the U.S. Senate to swiftly confirm him as Secretary of HUD.”

In the letter, Brown specifically points to Dr. Carson’s support for FHA’s mission and for rental assistance programs. He also notes that Dr. Carson has a clear understanding “of the key role that housing plays in the health of individuals and communities.”

Brown said that although the task ahead for housing policy is significant, NAR looks forward to working with Dr. Carson on key Realtor® issues.

“It’s no small task setting policies that support homeownership and real estate investment, and Dr. Carson is to be commended for taking on the challenge,” Brown said. “We look forward to working with Dr. Carson in his new capacity on behalf of that important mission.”
